Obama to Cuba: free the dissidents

President Barack Obama called on Cuba’s communist regime to release all political prisoners and he praised five dissidents recognized this week by the National Endowment for Democracy. Cuba has the worst human rights record in the hemisphere and consistently suppresses independent political activity.

Russia’s ‘rational’ democracy?

Russia must become a “rational” democracy, President Dmitry Medvedev said today, suggesting that political pluralism was essential for Russia’s economic development. “To ensure that our country remains competitive on a global scale, we must have political competition” domestically, Medvedev said.
