Something rare has happened in a region often given to brutal autocracy (writes Adam Nossiter): power has been peacefully transferred to a civilian, just four months after an army massacre that recalled the worst of Africa’s past.
The recent massacre in Guinea led to the arrest of prominent democracy activists, including attorney Thierno Baldé, a former grantee of the National Endowment for Democracy, and head of the Research Institute on Democracy and Rule of Law.
