The African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights has endorsed the report on Defending Civil Society, which details the legal barriers facing civil society and the principles underpinning cross-border democracy assistance.
Civil society activists attending the Forum on the Participation of NGOs in the 44th Session of the ACHPR in Abuja, Nigeria, also welcomed the initiative. The report, a joint effort by the World Movement for Democracy and the International Centre for Not-for-Profit Law, draws on extensive research and consultation with democracy and human rights activists across the world.
The meeting, co-sponsored by the African Democracy Forum, the World Movement for Democracy and African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies, discussed key issues raised by the report, including the right for individuals to form and join civil society organizations and the right to seek and secure resources across borders.
