Iran’s Green opposition wants democratic solidarity, activists insist

Is the US denying support to Iran’s Green opposition movement in order to placate the regime? Or, as administration officials claim, is it striving to deny the Islamic Republic hardliners an excuse to walk away from nuclear negotiations by claiming that the US is engineering regime change?

In any event, it is becoming clear that Iranian democrats would welcome Western solidarity, contrary to claims that they would be tainted or compromised by foreign assistance. As Iranian democracy activist Roya Boroumand, a grantee of the National Endowment for Democracy, notes: “Ask yourself why Iranians who protest in the street write things in English. They’re not just practicing language skills.”
