Former Dutch premier will head the Club of Madrid

Former Dutch premier Wim Kok, has been elected chairman of the Club of Madrid, a pro-democracy grouping of former government leaders.

The club convenes former heads of democratic states to advise leaders of new and emerging democracies. A former leader of the Dutch Labour party, Kok this week addressed the group’s annual conference in Madrid which addressed the political implications of the world economic crisis. Kok was the Prime Minister during two coalition governments between 1994 and 2002.

The Club’s previous Secretary General, former Canadian premier Kim Campbell, is now chair of the steering committee of the World Movement for Democracy.
