The Draper Hills Summer Fellows Program at Stanford University’s Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law is recruiting qualified applicants for the 2013 program to be held from July 21-August 9, 2013 on the Stanford campus. Entering its ninth year, the program brings together a group of 25-30 mid-career practitioners from transitioning countries where democracy is not well established in the regions of Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East/North Africa, and the post-communist world.

The three-week intensive academic training program exposes participants to the theory and practice of democracy, development and the rule of law taught by leading Stanford faculty members. The seminars and discussions allow fellows to explore new institutional models and frameworks to enhance their ability to promote democratic change in their home countries. In addition, fellows have the opportunity to connect to a global peer network of leaders to exchange ideas, experience and foster peer collaborations.

Candidates must be at least 27 years of age and possess at least six years  –  ideally ten – of experience actively working in the fields of law, politics, government, private enterprise, civil society, journalism or international development. A working knowledge of English is an essential prerequisite for participation in this academic training program.

The application process has changed this year and applicants will be required to submit a short intake questionnaire to ensure they meet the selection criteria. The prescreen form is due by November 23, 2012. If applicants meet the necessary criteria they will be sent the longer application, which will be due along with two letters of recommendation by December 14, 2012. The program receives a high volume of applications each year and we encourage everyone to apply early.
