Sergei Magnitsky (left), a corporate lawyer for the Hermitage Fund, an asset management company, died of medical neglect in a pre-trial detention facility in Moscow on November 16, 2009 after having exposed a $230 million tax fraud involving senior Russian officials. His case, powerfully documented in the recent film “Justice for Sergei,” prompted President Medvedev to open a probe into conditions during the pre-trial detention in Russia. However no one responsible for Magnitsky’s death has yet been brought to justice. Those involved in the fraud and denying Magnitsky medical treatment during his pre-trial detention have been promoted and decorated.
