Talking of Pakistan’s civil society, check out Khudi – ‘Awakening’ in Urdu – a new social movement that aims to mobilize youth, students and other civil society groups against Islamist extremists.
The group is supported by Quilliam, a UK-based group headed by former radical Islamists who have since developed a commitment to promoting democracy, pluralism and religious tolerance.
“Khudi is a much needed initiative that is about giving ordinary Pakistanis students the confidence to freely and openly discuss important political and social issues that have so much impact on their daily lives,” said Maajid Nawaz, co-director of Quilliam.
“With over 60 percent of Pakistanis under the age of 25, organizations like Khudi that work directly with young people can play a key role in strengthening civil society and making Pakistan resilient to extremism.”
