Defending Uganda’s civil society

Civil society activists have protested the Ugandan government’s approach to NGOs, citing a recently released report. “Government should not interfere with the operations of civil organisations,” noted Jassy Kwesiga, executive director of the Development Network of Indigenous Voluntary Associations.

Kampala is using legal and regulatory measures as a pretext to weaken civil society, according to a report on Defending Civil Society, co-produced by the International Centre for Not-For-Profit Law and the World Movement for Democracy. Prior to registration, a government agency must approve an NGO’s structure and any foreign employees.
