Aleppo the new Sarajevo? ’48 Hours of Awakeness’

48HOURS SARAJEVO

Is Aleppo the new Sarajevo, as French activist intellectual Bernard Henri-Levy claims?

Now that a revolution really is needed, those who were fervent are quite cool, the Polish poet Czeslaw Milosz wrote of Sarajevo

While a country murdered and raped calls for help from the Europe which it had trusted, they yawn.

While statesmen choose villainy and no voice is raised to call it by name.

The rebellion of the young who called for a new earth was a sham, and that generation has written the verdict on itself.

NOSOV Andrej-200x260Leading Serbian youth activist Andrej Nosov  (right) has created a live stream for an exhibition in Sarajevo entitled “48 Hours of Awakeness.” Organized by Andrej’s NGO Heartefact, the exhibition features uninterrupted public readings of the stories of refugees from antiquity to the present day, documenting the misfortune of those who have been forced to leave their homes. The exhibition will be streaming until 1 pm (EST) October 8.

Currently a Reagan-Fascell Fellow at the National Endowment for Democracy, Nosov is a leading youth activist and artist who uses a variety of media to engage the public on the politics of memory, transitional justice, and the rights of marginalized communities. In 2003, he founded the Youth Initiative for Human Rights (YIHR), a Belgrade-based NED grantee organization which grew to have offices throughout the former Yugoslavia.
